Purim Spiel, For Such a Time as This

Purim Spiel, For Such a Time as This

Painted on driftwood this scene depicts the moment that Queen Esther accuses the evil Haman in order save her people. In the foreground, the delicious traditional cookies of Purim, hamantaschen, and in the background the columns of Achashverosh's palace double as wine glasses as a nod to the saying one may drink "till he knows not Mordecai from Haman."

The Synagogue in Rexingen

The Synagogue in Rexingen

The former synagogue is situated in the heart of Rexingen, a suburb of Horb-on-Neckar. Up to the 1930s it was the religious centre of one of the largest rural Jewish communities in Württemberg. On November 9th, 1938, it was defiled and set on fire. The fire was extinguished but the synagogue was taken from the Jewish community. Since 1952 it has been a Protestant church and is today a memorial and educational centre.

Isaac (my son) as an Angel

Isaac (my son) as an Angel

Pencil Sketch by Janis Loewengart Yerington inspired by the verse from Isaiah 40:31. "Young men may grow tired and weary, even the fittest may stumble and fall; but those who hope in Adonai will renew their strength, they will soar aloft as with eagle's wings; when they are running they won't grow weary, when they are walking they won't get tired."

Oh my goodness, this is so heavy!

Oh my goodness, this is so heavy!

I don't know how Max lugged one of these around Europe. I could barely hold it for my 11 year old to take a shot with my iPhone.

Adoration of the Shepherds

Adoration of the Shepherds

by Domenico Ghirlandaio, 1485 I love this painting so much. It overwhelms me. When I first encountered it in the Sassetti Chapel in Santa Trinita in Florence I was struck with amazement. It was so incredible and I felt so moved. I began to weep. I had no words to express how I was feeling. I began to recite the Sh'ma, which my grandmother had taught me at a very young age.

Bolinas Buoys

Bolinas Buoys

acrylic, gouache and watercolor crayon on driftwood by Janis Loewengart Yerington This is one of my coastal folk art paintings. I have incorporated the verse from Job: when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'? This gives me a sense of comfort of how my family has been and will be protected.

Art Appreciation

Art Appreciation

I was honored when my friends, who are Old German Baptist Brethren, were the first to see some of my work for My Great-Grandfather's Bible. They don't frequent many museums but they were immediately captivated by the work. The father, David, used each painting as a teachable moment for his children, especially his youngest, Solomon.
